THE LION IN PHILATELY

I promised you a return to more beautiful designs, and here's the first one: Uganda.

This stamp is part of a definitive set issued in 1898, recess-printed by De La Rue. It's a straightforward affair, only two high values issued, and only one shade to be collected. On these high values, though not in strictly heraldic positions, two Lions appear as supporters of the shield bearing the portrait of Queen Victoria. Beautiful stamp!
