What is it with those Italians? I know that nowadays' society is blighted by a dumbing down process, or so they say anyway, but it seems as if this process has been going on for quite a while in Italy! If you take a look at their 1940s overprints for the Ionian Islands, they are almost riddled with spelling mistakes. Some have been rectified later but others have not. The 1941 overprints for Corfù are among that latter lot.
Now it may not be the gravest of errors, but there really should be a grave accent on the u. And, it is not as if they do not know how to do things properly, for only 18 years before they managed to get it right!
Oh well, it's a sign of the times I suppose!
